Call for Appointment-Contribute to the Financial Health of the Micmacs of Gesgapegiag!

On March 31, 2017, the Micmacs of Gesgapegiag Financial Administration Law, 2017, was approved and came into effect April 1, 2017. The law requires that Council establish and maintain a Finance and Audit Committee (“the Committee”). On June 23, 2017, Chief and Council appointed the first Finance and Audit Committee comprised of five members: two councillors to assume the functions of Chair and Vice-Chair; one member must be a registered member of Micmacs of Gesgapegiag living off reserve; one member must be a registered member of Micmacs of Gesgapegiag living on reserve; and, one member must not be a registered member of Micmacs of Gesgapegiag. Efforts are also done to achieve gender balance within the Committee.

The Committee is responsible to review and make recommendations to Council on the financial administration matters of the Micmacs of Gesgapegiag. It assists Council in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities for the financial planning and reporting processes, the system of internal control, the audit process, and the process for monitoring compliance with laws and regulations and the code of conduct. The Committee meets approximately five times per fiscal year through conference calls or video conferencing and twice a year through a face to face meeting in Gesgapegiag.

On September 23, 2019, Chief and Council appointed new councillors to be members of the Finance and Audit Committee: Christiane Jerome Bernard, Chair and Mitchell Syvret-Caplin, Vice-Chair. The other members are: Henry Martin, Mikael Lindquist and Jennifer Martin from the Membertou First Nation.

On September 27, Chief and Council received a letter of resignation from Mikael Lindquist as the member living on reserve.

Therefore, Council of Micmacs of Gesgapegiag is inviting its members living on reserve, who meet the eligibility criteria and financial competency, to apply for the position. The member will receive an honorarium of $100 for each meeting.
